Dress up a Sheet Cake: Stars and Stripes Patriotic Cake

Image
This time for the fourth of July I decided to make a simple sheet cake. We start out with a white frosted sheet cake. You can frost it yourself, leave it in the pan and only frost the top, or you can buy it frosted.  Then I put some buttercream in two separate bowls and added blue gel food coloring to one and red to the other.  And I mixed them through.  And I'm using three medium star tips.  I put some red, white and blue buttercream in piping bags with the star tips.  I started with red and piped some simple stars onto the sides of the cake to create stripes.  All the way around the cake.  I also got out three different sizes of star cutters.  I pressed them onto the top of the cake.  Then I filled them in with some simple stars piped to fill in the stars with blue buttercream.  I filled in all of the stars with blue.  Finally, I piped a shell border along the edge of the cake with white buttercream.  I think this cake is perfect for the Four

Recipe: Lemon American Buttercream

Image
Now that I have a recipe for lemon cake, we need lemon buttercream! I decided to alter my recipe for American buttercream to be lemon flavored. Lemon American Buttercream: 3-4 cups (500g) powdered sugar 1/2 cup (125g) butter 2-4 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice Cream butter. Add powdered sugar half at a time. Add lemon juice a tablespoon at a time as needed to obtain consistency. Beat as long as you want to get the buttercream nice and fluffy. You can't overbeat this. Tea Party Cake

Image
This one is a very feminine, whimsical cake. One I've been wanting to make for a while. I started out with four-inch round funfetti cake and stacked it with vanilla American buttercream.  Then I crumb-coated the cake.  And frosted it again.  Then I rolled out some pale lavender fondant.  And I covered the cake with it. But instead of smoothing it onto the cake, I left the folds in it and just trimmed it at the bottom so that it looked a little like a tablecloth.  Then I cut out a square of white fondant.  And pressed some flower texture into it.  And laid it over the cake like a second tablecloth.  Then I got out some gum paste. I rolled a ball. And cut out some small circles.  I also rolled a snake of gum paste and formed a handle and spout of the tea pot.  I placed one circle on the bottom of the tea pot and one on top to be the lid as well as a tiny ball to be the lid handle. Then I cut out four more circles and rolled four same-sized spheres.
