Galaxy Birthday Cake

Image
This cake came about because I originally thought that you needed an airbrush to make a galaxy cake. Then I saw someone paint it with paintbrushes and I realized that maybe I could make one, too. Even though I don't have an airbrush. I started with a round peanut butter cake and peanut butter frosting.  Then I frosted the cake with peanut butter frosting.  I covered the cake with black fondant. This is a necessary step for a galaxy cake. Black needs to be the backdrop.  I trimmed off the excess fondant with a sharp knife.  I got out all the paintbrushes I have. I only use these brushes for cake decorating.  I'm also using quite a few food colors today: white, turquoise, baby blue, pink and purple.  I put some of each of the colors in my paint palette.  I added a few drops of alcohol to each of the dark colors.  But I knew they were too dark to show up on the black fondant. So, I added some white food coloring to all the d...

Romantic Geode Cake

Image
This cake was for a couple that I know. They have a long-distance relationship across two continents. For the short time when they were together, I wanted to celebrate their time together by making them a cake. I asked their favorite flavor: chocolate. And their favorite colors: blue and red. I started out by stacking two six-inch square layers of vegan chocolate cake with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream. I made the buttercream by adding 200g of melted dark chocolate to a batch of Swiss meringue buttercream. It was heavenly. Then, before I frosted the cake, I cut a heart-shaped hole out of one side of the cake. And I frosted it really carefully around the funny-shaped hole.  And I cleaned up my cake board.  Then, I marbled white fondant with a bit of blue fondant and a long squirt of blue food coloring. I marbled them together until it got to this point and rolled it out.  The color distributed quite a bit while rolling it out and I draped it over the...

Die Toten Hosen Cake

Image
One of my husband's favorite bands, Die Toten Hosen, are actually from here. But they're known internationally as well. All those who are very familiar with hard rock know who they are. Their music is really intense and inspiring, in my opinion. Considering making a cake with that theme, I decided to ask them for permission to use their cover art. I heard back from them and was granted permission to make a cake with their images on it. So, all images were used with permission. I started out with red velvet cake baked in 10 inch square pans. I frosted them with lactose free cream cheese frosting. Then I covered it in black fondant.  I picked out the letters for Die Toten Hosen from my block alphabet.  Then I cut them out of white fondant, cut them with an extra line to look like the old-fashioned spray-painted letters, and stuck them on the side of the cake with edible glue.  I had printed out two of these cover art from their album and cut out differen...
