Tutorial: How to make Hawaiian flowers

Image
Okay, these aren't really Hawaiian flowers, but they remind me of Hawaii somehow. And since these aren't really meant to be a specific flower, I'll call them Hawaiian flowers. I started out cutting out some simple five petalled flowers. I used a dresden tool to make some lines and texture in the petals. Then I placed one of the flowers on top of the other. I pinched the petals in waves to give it some texture. I placed it on a paper towel to dry. I made several. I also made some pink and light blue, but only pink is pictured. These are for a wedding cake. To follow. Tutorial: How to Make a Fondant Carnation

Image
I love carnations. Some people find it strange, but I love how ruffly they are. So, here's the equipment I'm using today. You need a fondant roller, a pointed and a ball sculpting tool, at least one size of leaf cutter. And three sizes of these funky-looking vaguely flowery cutters. I'll call them ruffle flower cutters. I begin by making a small green cone of green. Then I used the ruffle flower cutters to cut out three sizes of purple ruffle flowers. Then I used a ball tool to thin the edges of the petals. Curl every other petal towards the center. Do this with every size. Then gently roll the smallest one toward the center and place it into the middle of the middle size. And do the same thing with the middle size into the center of the largest size. Now press the whole thing onto the green cone. Cut out a few green fondant leaves. Wrap them around the cone with the points toward the flower if you want to. This step is optional. The second one I made without pressing the ...

Flower Diversity Cake

Image
The idea behind this cake is to celebrate that all people are different and we are all beautiful in our own way. So, the theme is flowers. All kinds and colors of flowers. I started with some green fondant and used a patterned rolling pin to press this flower pattern into the fondant. Then I covered a 6-inch cake dummy with it. And I made a pink rose and placed it in the middle of the cake. And a pink carnation. And a pink tulip. This one is supposed to vaguely resemble a red chrysanthemum. This one is kind of like a red daisy. But, of course, we need a yellow tulip and a yellow daffodil. How about a yellow chrysanthemum? But, let's use blue as well. I also included some white flowers. And lined the bottom of the cake with small flower plunger cutters. I love this cake. There so much diversity. It's a great reminder that despite our differences, we all have beauty within us. How to Make a Fondant Lily

Image
Continuing a series on sugar flowers, we are going over how to make a calla lily out of fondant. Once again, it's really easy. The only equipment necessary is a heart-shaped cutter. I can be a fondant cutter or a cookie cutter. These are widely available in all shapes and sizes, so most people shouldn't have trouble making these.  But before we get to the hearts, let's start with the stamens. Lilies have a thick stamen, so I just rolled a snake of flesh-colored fondant and cut them into about one inch lengths. You can make them longer or shorter, thicker or thinner as you choose. I chose not to add texture, but you can add some texture to the sides with crumpled tin foil, if you would like to.  Next, roll out your fondant and cut out some hearts.  Place them point up, so upside down hearts. Glue the stamen to the center where the heart comes up. It should point toward the point of the heart. Then, carefully wrap the round part of the heart around the stamen. ...
