Halloween Steampunk Cake

Image
I love making Steampunk cakes. I try to make one every year. This year, I'm combining Steampunk with Halloween. I started out by stacking two 6-inch cake dummies on top of each other and frosted it with vegan American buttercream. Then I covered the top of the cake with some black fondant. I made some black ruffles by rolling out a strip of black fondant and using a pointed sculpting tool to make the ruffles. Then I placed it around the bottom of the cake. And I added rectangles of black fondant pinched into swags along the side of the cake. I overlapped them to make sure the edge of the ruffles were covered. Then I made another strip of black ruffles and covered the top of the swags. And I made another one pointed up and turned out. Then I rolled out a strip of purple fondant and used a fondant press form to add some texture to it. Loving this look. I placed the purple ribbon between the black ruffles. And I made a couple purple roses. And I added a few rose petals. Then I used a...

Barbie Silhouette Cake

Image
One of the girliest icons ever. Barbie. My girls love it. When I think of a Barbie cake, I think of a doll cake, but in this case I wanted a more elegant, maybe a bit grown up, Barbie silhouette. I started out frosting a 4-inch cake dummy with vegan American buttercream. And I covered it in pink fondant. Then I rolled out some black fondant and cut out this Barbie silhouette. And I placed it on the cake. And the creases on the side of the cake weren't my favorite, so I covered it with a black fondant bow. I also added a stripe of black along the bottom of the cake. Then I added some black polka dots along the side of the cake and a pink bow on Barbie's ponytail. I think this is about the girliest cake ever. Barbie with at touch of elegance. Piano Music Cake

Image
This one felt a bit like a challenge. Someone showed me a picture of a music themed cake. Even if they didn't ask if could make it, I felt like they had. Challenge accepted. I started out by frosting a cake dummy with vegan American buttercream on a round cake board covered in gold craft paper. Then I covered it in white fondant. And trimmed it to size. Then, using a fabric ruler and the back of a knife, I added lines along the side of the cake. Then I cut black strips 1.5 cm wide and 7.5 cm long. I rounded the corners and placed them on the lines around the cake. I continued this around the side of the cake in a piano configuration. Then I cut very thin strips of black fondant and laid five lines along the top of the cake. I twisted one thin strip into a treble clef and rolled other into music notes. Then I made some dusty rose fondant using a bit of red and brown food coloring mixed with white. I rolled it out and cut out a LOT of small circles. And I made a few small roses to p...
