Chocolate Pecan Cake

Image
This is a cake my 9-year-old daughter helped with that we made from some leftovers from other projects. I started out with a 4-inch vanilla cake and filled it with milk chocolate buttercream. Then we added some walnuts. We dolloped it with buttercream and added the next layer. And frosted the cake. Then I filled a piping bag with buttercream with a star tip. And Sabrina tried her hand at piping. I showed her how to make a rope border along the top edge. And a shell border along the bottom edge. Then we covered the cake with pecans wherever we wanted to. Sabrina said it looked like the pecans were having a meeting. Recipe: Popcorn Balls

Image
This is a very simple recipe that kids could make themselves. It would be perfect for a themed party and is very personalizable. Popcorn Balls: 1 pkg sweet microwave popcorn 18 large marshmallows (120g) 1 tsp artificial flavoring of any kind (optional) food coloring of any color (optional) First, pop the popcorn according the directions on the package. Melt the marshmallows. Stir in flavoring. And food coloring. Pour the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn. With buttered hands, combine the popcorn and the marshmallows. Press them into balls. These are a great party snack. Crunchy and sweet with your favorite flavoring and color. Also, since only the microwave is used, children can make them themselves. Baking with Children: Easter Cake

Image
This is a simple Easter cake that my children designed. I started out frosting a  6-inch cake dummy with vegan American buttercream. And my kids helped me cut out some Easter-themed cutouts. Out of pink, turquoise and yellow fondant. Then we began placing them on the cake. I let the kids decide where everything should go. After all, isn't Easter really about the kids? Happy Easter! Gingerbread House - Baking with Children

Image
I've had several failed attempts at making a gingerbread house with my kids before this. But this was the most successful gingerbread house I've made since starting to try to. I used my gingerbread recipe. I rolled out a good sized piece onto a sheet of baking paper. I cut one side to be straight and used a template I found online to help me figure out the dimensions. This one was 10 cm wide at the base with the sides 10 cm tall and 15 cm at the center peak.  These are the front and back pieces. The door is 3cm by 7cm The windows are 1.5 cm by 1.5 cm. I happened to have a cutter the right size, so I used that for the windows. The back piece had no windows, although looking back I feel I should have put some in it.  The side walls were 10 x 10cm. The roof pieces were 10 x 7cm. I also cut some windows into the side pieces, but not the roof.  I mixed up a batch of thick royal icing.  I wanted my kids to participate, so I put some royal icing into a couple ...
