Casual Buttercream Cake

Image
This cake was for a casual event. Just a potluck with friends. But I felt like doing some piping for it. So, I made an 8-inch vegan chocolate cake.  I filled and frosted the cake with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. And I put the rest of the buttercream in a piping bag with a medium open star tip. I piped a shell border along the bottom of the cake. I piped a rope border along the top edge of the cake. I piped a swirl in the middle of the cake with tall drop flowers around the top. And I piped some star garlands along the side of the cake.  Finally, I sprinkled the top with some rainbow sprinkles. I think this cake turned out sweet. It looks fancier than it is. Kind of like a birthday cake. Buttercream Flowers Baby Shower Cake

Image
This cake was for a friend's baby shower. This is a 9-inch vanilla cake filled and frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream.  I colored the buttercream red, yellow, blue, purple and green. I put the red, yellow and blue in piping bags with star tips, purple in a piping bag with a petal tip and green in a piping bag with a leaf tip. I piped some purple flowers with the petal tip in loops around a center. Then I piped some red rosettes. And some blue rosettes. And some yellow drop flowers. And I filled in the gaps with green leaves.  I think this cake turned out beautiful.  It was just what the mother-to-be requested. Congratulations, Leah! Brown on Brown Buttercream Cake

Image
This cake was for my own birthday. Comes around every year. This year, I wanted a maple cake. So, this is a 6-inch maple cake filled and frosted with maple Swiss meringue buttercream.  I also put the maple buttercream in two piping bags with medium open star tips. There was a lighter brown and a darker brown. If you saw my recipe on maple buttercream, I explain that it is naturally off white. But I feel that people don't taste a flavor properly unless it looks like it tastes like it does. So, I colored the majority of the buttercream with brown food coloring with a bit of red to warm up the color and I colored some of it a darker brown using the same method. I first started piping with the lighter brown. I piped a star border along the bottom of the cake. Then I piped a reverse shell border along the top edge of the cake. This is a twist in opposite directions: right, then left. Then I piped some swirls on top of the cake. And I piped a border along the top side of the cake. Then, ...

Buttercream Relief Society Birthday Cake

Image
This cake was for the Relief Society birthday celebration at my church. The Relief Society is the women's organization for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I baked two layers of cake in a 13x9 inch cake pan: one chocolate and one vanilla. I filled it with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream.   Then I frosted the cake with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream.  Then I frosted it again with vegan American buttercream. Vegan American buttercream is much prettier than other buttercreams, but doesn't taste very good. It's much too sweet and almost flavorless. So, I first frost the cake with the buttercream that tastes good and frost it again with the pretty buttercream.  Then I color some buttercream blue without a tip and gold (using yellow and a bit of brown) with a round tip and white with a medium open star tip.  I used a circle cutter to mark a circle in the middle of the cake. Then I filled it in with blue.  And I smoothed it with a spat...
