Twelve Days of Christmas Cake

Image
I love the song the Twelve Days of Christmas. This is my homage to it. I frosted a sheet cake dummy with vegan American buttercream. I used a spatula to divide the cake into twelve equal parts. And I used a fondant press mold to make the numbers 1 through 12 and placed them into the boxes. First, I modeled a pear. And placed it in the first box. And I used a dove cut out to make two white doves and placed them in the second box. I then modeled a gray hen and placed it in the third box. A yellow song bird in the fourth box. And a old ring in the fifth box. And I modeled a gray goose in the sixth box, placing a toothpick to get the long neck to stand up straight. And I modeled a white swan using two pieces of toothpicks to make the bent neck. And I made a milk pail for the eighth box. Nine and ten I couldn't get around making the people, since nothing else represents them. So, I made 2D people. A lady dancing in box 9 and a Lord leaping in box ten. Box eleven gets a recorder. And bo...

September 11th Memorial Cake

Image
It's been 20 years since September 11th, 2001. I can't believe it's been 20 years. I was in college when the twin towers were destroyed. I remember it so vividly. I will never forget. I knew that I had to make a memorial cake. I am definitely not trying to trivialize anything. This is just how I work through my own feelings about what I experienced that day and hope that is speaks to others as well. I made a batch of vegan American buttercream and colored it black, red, blue and two shades of green. I frosted a sheet cake dummy with white buttercream. I printed out a picture of the lower 48 United States. I traced around the cut out with a toothpick. And I traced the outline of the twin towers inside the US map. They look different because the twin towers actually didn't line up. They were more like catty corner from each other. They weren't in a line. So, no matter where you were standing when looking at them, the perspective would never be exact. Then I put the bu...

Super Mario Brothers Sheet Cake

Image
This was a request from my husband. He loved playing Super Mario Brothers as a child. First, I made a batch of vegan American buttercream and colored it black, yellow, brown, red, green and blue. Then I frosted a sheet cake dummy with white buttercream. I printed out a picture of Mario and Luigi. As well as a picture of the Super Mario logo. Then I traced around the picture of Mario and Luigi, leaving an impression in the buttercream. Then I followed the lines with the black buttercream. Then I piped some yellow in the buttons of the overalls, blue and white in the eyes and white on the gloves. And I filled in the rest with red, blue, green and brown. I also piped a dollop of white on the hats and used a toothpick to make the M and L. Then I piped the word Mario on the side and surrounded it with black. And, since it wasn't centered, I added a coin. And I added a border alternating red, blue, yellow and green. I think this cake is cute. It's playful and fun. Don't forget c...
