Brown on Brown Buttercream Cake

Image
This cake was for my own birthday. Comes around every year. This year, I wanted a maple cake. So, this is a 6-inch maple cake filled and frosted with maple Swiss meringue buttercream.  I also put the maple buttercream in two piping bags with medium open star tips. There was a lighter brown and a darker brown. If you saw my recipe on maple buttercream, I explain that it is naturally off white. But I feel that people don't taste a flavor properly unless it looks like it tastes like it does. So, I colored the majority of the buttercream with brown food coloring with a bit of red to warm up the color and I colored some of it a darker brown using the same method. I first started piping with the lighter brown. I piped a star border along the bottom of the cake. Then I piped a reverse shell border along the top edge of the cake. This is a twist in opposite directions: right, then left. Then I piped some swirls on top of the cake. And I piped a border along the top side of the cake. Then, ...

Buttercream Unicorn Birthday Cake

This cake was for my daughter's ninth birthday. She is obsessed with unicorns right now, so she wanted a buttercream unicorn cake for her birthday.  This is an 8-inch vanilla cake filled and frosted with uncolored strawberry buttercream.  Then I colored most of the rest of the buttercream light purple, darker purple, pink and blue. I frosted the cake again with light purple buttercream. Then I put the blue, pink and dark purple buttercream in piping bags with star tips and the uncolored buttercream in a piping bag with a medium round tip. I later put the rest of the uncolored buttercream in a piping bag with a star tip. Then I made some ears and a horn out of white fondant.  I piped some closed eyes with eyelashes. Then I placed the ears and horn on the cake. I piped a shell border along the bottom with the uncolored buttercream. Then I piped rosettes out of dark purple. And blue. And then pink. I also filled in some gaps with stars.  I am so proud of this cake...

The request was for a chocolate cake with raspberry Swiss merinuge buttercream filled with fresh raspberries with some pretty piping and the words "Happy Birthday" in blue and white. I can do that. I made a batch of Swiss meringue buttercream, putting some white buttercream aside, and flavored and colored the rest raspberry and colored it blue. I put the white in piping bags with a small round tip and a medium star tip. And the blue raspberry buttercream in a piping bag with a small star tip.  I decided to try out a new recipe for devil's food cake, which turned out fantastic. So, this is an 8-inch round devil's food cake. I filled it with raspberry buttercream and fresh raspberries. It was three layers high. Then I frosted the cake with the blue raspberry buttercream. I piped a reverse shell border along the top edge, a sh...
