How to Make a Fondant Lily

Continuing a series on sugar flowers, we are going over how to make a calla lily out of fondant. Once again, it's really easy.

The only equipment necessary is a heart-shaped cutter. I can be a fondant cutter or a cookie cutter. These are widely available in all shapes and sizes, so most people shouldn't have trouble making these.
But before we get to the hearts, let's start with the stamens. Lilies have a thick stamen, so I just rolled a snake of flesh-colored fondant and cut them into about one inch lengths. You can make them longer or shorter, thicker or thinner as you choose. I chose not to add texture, but you can add some texture to the sides with crumpled tin foil, if you would like to.
Next, roll out your fondant and cut out some hearts.
Place them point up, so upside down hearts. Glue the stamen to the center where the heart comes up. It should point toward the point of the heart. Then, carefully wrap the round part of the heart around the stamen.
You can make them varying sizes. I personally feel that the larger hearts make a more realistic lily.
There are also multi-colored lilies. Here I'll show you how to make the lower front part a different color. I stuck a piece of colored fondant onto the white and rolled it out, cutting out the hearts with the round part of the heart on the colored part.
Then I wrapped it around the stamen the exact same way.
I like how both of them looked. Although, if you want the color just to show up in the heart of the flower, then you would need to put the colored fondant in the center of the heart you're cutting out.
But seriously, aren't they lovely? I think they really look like calla lilies. It's so very pretty.
