Background
I've debated for months about starting this blog. I mean, there are hundreds of baking blogs and thousands of food blogs out there. What can I have to say that would be valuable?
Well, there's my new hobby. I've been learning to make and decorate cakes. I find it really fun and I've been getting really great feedback on them, although I'm still learning.
What's so special about that? Well, I also live in Germany. How is my English so good? I'm American. Born and raised in the United States. But I moved to Germany in 2008 as an adult. My husband is German. My children were born in Germany and have dual citizenship.
That means that some ingredients that Americans can find at the nearest grocery store can be very elusive. Substitutes can be necessary. Other hard-to-find products in the US are available at the corner grocery store here. Amazon fills the gaps fairly well, but even then there are some things that are hard to find. It can be an adventure. For those Americans who love baking and happen to be doing it in Europe, this can help you orient yourself.
A few disclaimers, I bake as a hobby, not professionally. I make mistakes. My kitchen is rarely ever really clean. I don't take professional photos. I like to keep it real. Also remember those before-mentioned children? I have two little girls. They can keep me pretty busy. I may not always have time to update the blog. I'll try to post whenever I make something new.
Another quirk, my oldest daughter is lactose intolerant so many of the recipes I use are vegan to avoid using milk products. No, we're not vegan. And there are other solutions to baking for lactose intolerant people, but I've fallen in love with a few vegan cake recipes that have become my go to recipes.
I hope you enjoy reading about my baking adventures.
