Twin's Soccer Cake
I'm a strong proponent of twins having their own cakes. When a friend of ours told us their twin girls' birthdays were coming up, I offered to make them each their own cake. I asked them seperately what they wanted and colors/themes. This is the first one. Stay tuned for the second.
This girl told me she wanted chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream with the theme soccer. And that her favorite color was navy blue. I immediately thought of my sphere cake pan. I wanted to make her a soccer ball cake.
I apologize for the lack of photos in this post. I realized after the fact that I had neglected to take as many photos of the process that I usually do.
However, I baked one six inch layer of vegan chocolate cake and one sphere pan of vegan chocolate cake. I layer the sphere cake into two layers and whipped up a batch of chocolate American buttercream. I assembled the cake on a cake board, starting with the six inch round layer with buttercream between the layers and the sphere cake on top. After I assembled the cake I realized that the sphere cake wasn't a perfect sphere anymore. It must have been a little pushed around in the freezer. It was more an oval shape than a sphere. After stacking the cake, I decided to trim it a bit. Using a serrated knife, I trimmed the sides of the cake that were sticking out on one side and reformed it into a sphere shape. After all, we want a soccer ball, not an American football.
Then I crumb coated and frosted the cake with the chocolate buttercream and chilled it until the buttercream was set. I used a soccer cutter set including a pentagon and a hexagon to cut out pentagons out of black fondant and hexagons out of white fondant. Then, starting with a black pentagon in the center, I began assembling the soccer ball.
Then, I used the dark blue I had and added a touch of black to make it a bit darker. Then I rolled it into a large strip and used the slightly waved strip to wrap around the bottom of the cake. I had to patch a bit, but in general, it looked really nice.
Then I rolled out light yellow fondant and used my block alphabet cutters to cut out the girl's name and the number 8. The name went on the dark blue banner and the 8 went right on the top of the soccer ball.
This cake is the kind appropriate for any soccer fan, whether boy, girl or adult. I was really happy with the final result, and I think the birthday girl will love it.
Happy 8th birthday, Larissa!
