Dress up a Sheet Cake: Back to School Notebook Paper Cake

Knowing this dress up a sheet cake would come out in September, I decided to do a back to school theme.

I had ordered a new cake dummy, since my last one bit the dust, and I accidentally ordered the wrong size. This one is huge. It only just fits on my largest cake board. I made a new batch of vegan American buttercream and I colored some black, red, yellow and blue.
Then I got out my smallest round piping tips.
And put black, blue and red buttercream in piping bags with these small round tips.
The white and yellow don't need piping bags.
I frosted the sides of the cake dummy with yellow buttercream.
And I frosted the top with white buttercream. then I got out a ruler and held it up to the side of the cake.
I marked them at one-inch intervals and piped along them with black buttercream.
Then I marked the top of the cake along both sides every half an inch and connected them by pressing the ruler into the buttercream. Then I piped along the impressions with blue buttercream.
Then I piped a line of red down one side to mimic the look of a sheet of notebook paper.
I piped the words Back to School with the black. I must admit, writing with buttercream is harder than it looks. Then I piped a rough shape of an apple with red and smoothed it with a spatula. And piped a stem with black.
Then I put a little bit of yellow buttercream into a piping bag without a tip and piped a rough sun into the top corner.
 Then I piped A, B, and C with red and 1, 2 and 3 with black.
I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. I mean, how cute is the sheet of notepaper cake?
It really makes me think of back to school. Stay within the lines. Write double-spaced.
Best wishes this school year for everyone!
