Tutorial: Essential Equipment for Beginning Bakers

I was thinking about what all a beginner would need. Not a beginning cake decorator, but a beginning baker. Someone who has never made a pie or cookies. But those who want to. What would they absolutely need?

Here are a few of those things I've thought of you will definitely need:

Measuring cups. You will want to be able to measure your ingredients.
Of course, you also need measuring spoons. A teaspoon is not the same as a tablespoon!
I am very aware that not every culture uses measuring cups, like people do in the US, so if it's more common or if you just prefer, you will need a kitchen scale. If you only use cups and never use grams or ounces, you may not necessarily need it, but if you never use cups, it will be essential.

You will need a large mixing bowl. At least one. And if you're really planning on getting into baking a variety of recipes, consider getting a glass or metal bowl to allow you to use it over a double boiler.
You will definitely need a whisk. Some ingredients must be added using a whisk.
A large, sturdy spoon. Some people swear by wooden spoons, but in my experience it doesn't affect the taste of your baked goods if you use plastic, wood or metal. But you will need a sturdy spoon.
A rubber spatula. Perfect for scraping bowls and folding ingredients into batter.
A standard rolling pin. This is very helpful for rolling out dough for cookies or pie crusts.
Do not forget your pot holders, also called hot pads. We don't want any burned fingers!

Also, you will at least need a hand mixer. You don't have to run out and buy a stand mixer when you're just getting started, but a good hand mixer is absolutely essential. The first time you try to whip a meringue by hand, you will be sure you need it, too.
Now let's talk baking dishes. Most bakers who make a variety of things have a whole collection of baking pans. But here are a few I use all the time. This is a standard 13x9 inch quarter sheet pan also known as a casserole dish. It is incredibly versatile and can handle almost any recipe you can throw at it.
A standard bread pan if you want to bake bread.
A pie plate or a nine-inch round cake pan if you can't find a pie plate. Also very versatile. Can make pies or cakes or cheesecakes, etc.
So, remember to get the equipment you need!
