Simple Hanukkah Cake
This is another nod to my very close Jewish friend, Rachel. It's that time of year. Hanukkah!
So, if you don't know, as I didn't, Hanukkah originated in the Maccabbean rebellion when at one point the Maccabbeans were holed up in the Temple and could not escape. They only had enough oil for one day, but miraculously, the lamps remained lighted for a total of eight days. In the end, the Jews were able to keep their temple, which was also a miracle. So, Jews celebrate these miracles with eight days of small gifts, money and candles.
So, let's get to the cake. I started out with pumpkin spice cake.
I filled the cake.
And frosted it with the goat cream cheese frosting.
Then I cut some lengths of wooden dowel.
And I covered them with pale blue fondant. These are the candles. But candles, need flames. I marbled some orange and yellow fondant together.
I placed the candles in the cake. This is not the traditional candle placement for Hanukkah, but it worked better for a round cake. Also, if you're counting, there are nine and not eight candles. I know. The ninth is used to light the other candles. It's also ceremonial.
I rolled the yellow-orange fondant into balls and pinched one side into a point. Of course, if you prefer, you can always use real candles.
Then I cut out some stars of David from blue fondant and placed them around the side of the cake.
Finally, I cut out some letters from blue fondant to spell "Happy Hanukkah" and placed them on the cake board.
I like this cake. It's very simple, but effective.
Perfect for a small, intimate celebration.
Happy Hanukkah!
