Paw Patrol / Unicorn Combined Birthday Cake
My daughter's birthday theme this year is Paw Patrol. Because of the pandemic, we knew we couldn't invite lots of friends over. So, we decided to invite one friend. It just so happens, however, that this friend also has a birthday the day before my daughter. So, hey, let's make it a double birthday party! Her friend's theme? Unicorns. Let's do it.
I decided to use my daughter's stuffed animal as a model for the unicorn.
Then I pressed the design a bit deeper into the fondant.
I added a ball of black fondant into the eye. I rolled snakes of pink, turquoise and lavender to form the mane. And I painted the horn gold with edible gold paint. I set this aside and allowed it to dry before using it.
I also made some 2D Paw Patrol figures for Natalie's side. I decided to make this into a separate tutorial, you can read about here:
Then, I baked four layers of vanilla cake colored purple, turquoise, pink and uncolored.
Then white.
Then turquoise.
Then purple.
These colors are where unicorns and girly Paw Patrol overlap.
Then I crumb coated the cake with Swiss meringue buttercream.
Then I frosted it again with more buttercream.
I rolled out some white fondant.
And covered the cake with it. I smoothed it on and cut off the excess with a knife. The small flaws in the fondant are small balls of fondant that were on the outside of the ball of fondant and are dried out. It happens. It's unfortunate. But true.
Then I got out my dry unicorn.
I pressed it onto the side of the cake.
Then, on the opposite side of the cake, I put the figures of Skye and Everest.
Then I used my Disney alphabet cutters.
And cut out the two names as well as the ages of the two girls.
And I placed the names on the cake. Natalie is closer to the center because her name is longer.
But Naomi also fit on the top of the cake entirely. Then I cut some strips of pink and lined the bottom of the cake with it.
I also put the pink at the bottom of the cake between the figures.
I also made a couple of bows and placed them next to Everest,
And Skye.
Okay, too much information, but this is the second time I'm using these toppers. I also used them on the Paw Patrol family party cake. But I needed to trim them to fit on the other cake, so now they're both trimmed a bit. To cover the trim, I laid some pink ribbon over the trimmed area. And I placed another bow on top of Skye.
I also placed a few bows around the unicorn.
And I rolled out some pink and lavender fondant and cut out a whole bunch of little decorations. Flowers of various sizes, butterflies, hearts and stars.
I placed them mostly to fill in empty space and cover the small tears from the hard pieces in the white fondant. But it was also meant to look fairly random and whimsical.
But how adorably girly is this Paw Patrol cake?
Oh, was it a Paw Patrol cake?
Or was it a whimsical unicorn cake?
I love the way it turned out.
Gorgeous and girly. Perfect for the combined birthday party.
Happy Birthday, Natalie!
Happy Birthday, Naomi!
