Bread Baking: Naan Bread
This one was a question from someone on Facebook. The question was what is the difference between naan bread, pita bread and tortillas. So, since I've already posted a recipe for tortillas, I thought I'd move on to naan bread.
Naan bread:
1 tbsp dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup (110mL) warm water
3 cups (375g) flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup (55mL) olive oil
1/3 cup (80g) plain yoghurt
1 egg
Allow to proof until small bubbles start forming.
Add oil and yoghurt to yeast mixture.
Add eggs as well.
Stir together.
Put 1-2 cups of the flour into a large mixing bowl and combine salt with it.
Then pour in yeast mixture.
Stir until well combined.
Add more flour a little at a time.
Knead into the dough. Knead until smooth and elastic.
Cover and allow to raise for about an hour or until dough doubles in size. Split into 8 relatively even pieces.
Roll out onto a silicone mat or lightly floured surface. Warning: do not stack the rolled out dough. They will stick together.
Heat a clean pan over medium heat.
Cook naan bread about 20 seconds on each side.
The cooked bread can be stacked, though.
This bread is soft and pliable. Neutral flavor, so perfect for eating with spicy foods.
