Dress up a Sheet Cake: Quarantine/Lockdown Cake
At this point, it's the elephant in the room. Quarantine. Lockdown. Covid-19. Corona Virus. I decided I wanted to make a cake about it to show the things that we either use more now, or use at all because of the lockdown.
As always, we start out with a frosted sheet cake. You can frost it yourself, leave it in the pan and only frost the top, or you can buy it frosted.
Covered it with a white screen and a home button.
But, although we've been using smartphones for years, it's the app Zoom that is new. Most of us hadn't used it much before Lockdown. Since? Constantly.
And, of course, we use a headset to talk on our Zoom meetings.
Then I rolled out some blue fondant and pressed a few lines into it.
And added some straps to make it into a medical mask. This is something that those of us who don't work in the medical field had rarely even had in their hands before the pandemic. But we all have to wear constantly since.
I also made a sign that says "School Closed". Something we see too often right now.
This ticket could represent anything. Concert ticket, plane ticket, event ticket, whatever.
Then I covered the ticket with red letters reading VOID.
Surrounded by a red box to look like a stamp. Yep. Our events have been cancelled left and right.
I cut out the letters for several words to go around the cake. I started with Lockdown.
Then I moved on to Quarantine.
Then Corona.
And, of course, Covid-19.
But, aren't we all trying to make the best of a bad situation? Let's decorate this cake.
But... that looks less like decorations and more like a unicorn factory exploded all over this cake.
I decided it was representative of toxic positivity. You know what I mean. People telling us all the great things that will be happening because we're home more. Think of all the quality time you will have with your kids! You always wanted time to work on a new project. Now you have it! Isn't that great?
I think this cake very much represents what most of us are thinking about and feeling during this global pandemic.
Do I like this cake?
Absolutely not! I hate it! I hate that we aren't allowed to meet our friends, but have to contact them online.
I hate that the schools are closed and my seven-year-old can't get the support she needs to actually make progress in reading, which she is hopelessly far behind.
I hate that we always have to wear masks.
And worst of all, the cancelled plans are the worst. So much disappointment. So many cancelled plans. So many fun things that aren't happening now.
Yes, I hate this cake.
I hate it so much that I destroyed it on camera.
I think we can all relate to these feelings.
Covid-19 sucks.
