Bread Baking: Milchbrötchen (sweet bread rolls)

 These sweet milk bread rolls are a favorite of most German children.

Milchbrötchen:
1 cup (250mL) milk
1/4 cup (80g) butter
4 cups (500g) flour
1/4 cup (50g) sugar
1 tbsp vanilla sugar or 1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp dry yeast
1 egg


Heat milk and butter until milk is warm, but not hot, and the butter is melted. 



Add sugar, vanilla sugar and yeast. 


Slowly add flour and salt. Knead in egg last. 


Allow to rise about 45 minutes. 



Form into rolls and place in baking pan. 


Allow to rise another 15 minutes. 


Bake at 350°F or 180°C for about 20 minutes.
